Infographic: Facebook vs. Twitter Demographics

This article is absolutely stunning. Looking at the facts and figures of how many people actually use social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter makes you wonder why anyone would ever oppose using social media. The current number of people who use Twitter is 106 MILLION. That, to me, is incredible. But when you read on and you see that Facebook currently has 500 MILLION users, that blows Twitter out of the water. Looking at the graphs, the fact that 41% of all Facebook users log in to Facebook EVERY DAY and the majority are 18-34. This is a no-brainer for marketers who are targeting this demographic. People keep saying that social media is killing journalism and that it is a giant waste of time... but in reality, social media is becoming the new journalism... it is becoming an amazing outlet for marketers to utilize.

  1. This article is amazing. At first I looked at it and it looked aesthetically nice, it looked very spiffy. After looking at the data, it become even more fascinating. They break down almost every demographic I would have thought of and what stood out to me the most is how many people use each media outlet, outside of the U.S. I did not realize that the world was actually using these more than the people in the U.S. What is also fascinating is that if you look closely there are more people in the age range of 45-54 using Twitter than Facebook. Is this a trend? Do people look more at short messages than following people and dealing with a huge webpage? I don't know but many of these numbers are interesting and it is so interesting to see the world changing into a social media frenzy. This is also great for a marketer like myself to see demographics laid out and easy to see what media outlets people are interesting in.

  2. I agree with you in the fact that people believe social media is killing journalism, but really it doesn't HAVE to. To me, social media is a way for journalists to get their stories. Recently, there was a stabbing in Madison at their street party Mifflin. If you look on Facebook, people are creating events about it!

This one in particular is about a guy whose friend was stabbed and is trying to find the person who stabbed his friend. This could be a great story for a journalist.

The only problem that I do agree with that journalists may have a problem with using social media as an outlet is the fact that some things may not be true. Throughout the social media world, some things are put up for attention or to raise a voice. If a journalist got caught up in a story like this but then found out it was false, they just wasted their time. But, I have a hard time believing that out of all the people on Facebook and Twitter, you couldn't find at least one good story. I believe social media can help journalists and even businesses. It's a great way to interact with our world today.
